Paradise or Pit...

A proposed exploratory mining lease, that threatened vital rainforest habitat on Christmas Island, was recently rejected by the Federal Government.

Minister of Environment and Energy, Josh Frydenberg, did not approve the exploration mining permit citing the significant and unacceptable impacts on the environment of Christmas Island, including impacts to the Endangered Abbott's Booby.

This decision is welcome news to the unique and amazing bird and wildlife of Christmas Island but only offers a short reprieve. BirdLife Australia has been working to build the case for an economically and sustainable just transition to an economy based on eco-tourism and away from mining.
